Vaginal Dryness
A thin layer of moisture coats the walls of the vagina. This moisture provides an alkaline environment that sperm can survive in and travel in for sexual reproduction. These vaginal secretions also lubricate the vaginal wall, reducing friction during sexual intercourse.
As a woman ages, changes in hormone production can cause the vaginal walls to thin. Thinner walls mean fewer cells that secrete moisture. This can lead to vaginal dryness. Hormonal changes are the most common cause of vaginal dryness, but they aren’t the only cause.

Treatment
Vaginal dryness is a symptom of many different medical conditions. It can cause pain during sitting, standing, exercising, urinating (peeing), and sexual intercourse.
Vaginal dryness can occur at any age. It is most common in women during or after menopause (the end of menstruation, a woman’s monthly period). Many effective treatments are available.
In many cases, women have vaginal dryness when estrogen hormone levels decrease. Treatments for other conditions can also cause this symptom. Vaginal dryness can result from:
- Menopause.
- Breastfeeding and childbirth.
- Birth control pills.
- Cancer treatments including chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.
- Diabetes.
- Medications, including anti-estrogen medications (treating uterine fibroids or endometriosis), certain antidepressants, and antihistamines (treating itchy eyes and runny noses).
- Removal of the ovaries.

Vaginal dryness occurs when the tissues of the vagina are not well lubricated and healthy. It can occur at any age but is more common in older women. Warning signs are:
- Pain or discomfort during penetrative sexual intercourse
- Light bleeding after intercourse
- Soreness, itching, or burning of the vagina
- Mild vaginal discharge
Any burning, itching, or discomfort in the area is worth a call to your doctor or gynecologist. They’ll ask about your past health and find out how long you’ve had symptoms and what seems to make them worse or better.
Your doctor will do a pelvic exam, checking your vagina for any thinning or redness. The exam will help rule out other possible causes for your discomfort, including a vaginal or urinary tract infection. The doctor may also remove cells from your vaginal wall or cervix for a Pap test.
A number of factors may contribute to vaginal or genital dryness.
Low Estrogen Vaginal dryness is most often caused by a decrease in estrogen levels. Estrogen is a hormone that helps keep the tissues of your vagina lubricated and healthy. Many factors can cause estrogen depletion:
- Menopause or perimenopause
- Childbirth
- Breastfeeding
- Smoking
- Surgical removal of the ovaries
- Chemotherapy and radiation in the pelvic area
- Anti-estrogen medications
- Cancer therapy
- Severe depression and stress
