Diagnostic D&C
D&C is a procedure in which your cervix is dilated (slowly opened) and tissue is removed from the inside of your uterus. The tissue is removed with a thin instrument called a curette.Usually, a D&C is done to find the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding (bleeding from your uterus). Examples of abnormal uterine bleeding include:
- Bleeding between periods.
- Bleeding after vaginal intercourse, including light spots of blood.
- Heavy, irregular, or long periods.
- Sudden vaginal bleeding after a year or longer without getting a period.
A D&C can also be done to diagnose or treat other conditions of the uterus. It also can be used to clear the lining of the uterus after a miscarriage or abortion.

Treatment
Dilation and curettage can diagnose or treat a uterine condition.
To diagnose a condition
Your doctor might recommend a type of D&C called endometrial sampling to diagnose a condition if:
- You have abnormal uterine bleeding
- You experience bleeding after menopause
- Your doctor discovers abnormal endometrial cells during a routine test for cervical cancer
To perform the test, your doctor collects a tissue sample from the lining of your uterus (endometrium) and sends the sample to a lab for testing. The test can check for:
- Endometrial hyperplasia — a precancerous condition in which the uterine lining becomes too thick
- Uterine polyps
- Uterine cancer

Diagnostic D&C Faq's
D&C can be done in a doctor’s office or in the hospital. You may be given medications to relax you or to put you to sleep for a short time. Your doctor will slowly widen the opening to your uterus (cervix). Opening your cervix can cause cramping. If this procedure is performed in the doctor’s office, you will receive medications that numb your cervix and make it easier to open. After dilating (opening) the cervix, tissue from inside the uterus is removed with a scraping instrument known as a curette, a suction tube, or other specialized instruments.
A D&C is a minor surgical procedure to remove tissue from the uterus (womb). A gynecologist or obstetrician performs this surgery in their office or a surgery center. It’s usually an outpatient procedure, so you go home the same day.
A D&C gets its name from:
- Dilation of the cervix: The provider dilates, or opens, the cervix. The cervix is the opening of the uterus, where it meets the top of the vagina. Usually, the cervix only dilates during childbirth.
- Curette: The provider uses this thin instrument to scrape the uterine wall and remove tissue.
You might need a D&C if you have or had:
- A miscarriage.
- Leftover tissue in the uterus after an abortion.
- Unexplained bleeding between menstrual periods.
Sometimes, you have a D&C and hysteroscopy. During this procedure, your provider inserts a device into the cervix to see the inside of the uterus. You may have a hysteroscopy with a D&C if your provider is trying to diagnose a problem.
