Myomectomy
A myomectomy is a surgery to remove fibroids without taking out the healthy tissue of the uterus. It is best for women who wish to have children after treatment for their fibroids or who wish to keep their uterus for other reasons. You can become pregnant after myomectomy. This procedure is considered standard of care for removing fibroids and preserving the uterus.
Myomectomy has traditionally been performed through a large abdominal incision, however advances in technology have provided less invasive alternatives such as hysteroscopic and laparoscopic myomectomies.

Treatment
A myomectomy is an operation to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus. For women who have fibroid symptoms and want to have children in the future, myomectomy is the best treatment option.
Myomectomy is very effective, but fibroids can re-grow. The younger you are and the more fibroids you have at the time of myomectomy, the more likely you are to develop fibroids again in the future. Women nearing menopause are the least likely to have recurring problems from fibroids after a myomectomy.
A myomectomy can be performed in several different ways. Depending on the size, number and location of your fibroids, you may be eligible for an abdominal myomectomy, a laparoscopic myomectomy or a hysteroscopic myomectomy.

Uterine Fibroid Removal ( Myomectomy) Faq's
Myomectomy is performed only for the treatment of uterine fibroids. It may be chosen over hysterectomy because a woman:
- Hopes to have (more) children.
- Has uterine fibroids that are interfering with her ability to get pregnant.
- Wants to preserve her uterus.
There are two types of uterine fibroid removal surgery:
- Myomectomy
- Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy can be performed through the vagina, through a large incision in the abdomen, or through laparoscopy. There are different types of hysterectomy:
- Total hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus and the cervix.
- Supracervical hysterectomy involves removal of the upper part of the uterus, while the cervix is left in place.
- Radical hysterectomy involves total hysterectomy as well as removal of the structures around the uterus. This is most commonly performed when cancer is suspected or present.[v]
Other surgeries that may be performed at the same time of hysterectomy include:
- Salpingo-oopherectomy involves removal of the fallopian tubes and the ovaries.
- Oopherectomy involves removal of just the ovaries.
