Uterine Septum Removal
A uterine septum is a congenital uterine anomaly that is, in essence, an embryologic remnant within the uterus that did not resorb away as it does in most women. Adverse effects of a uterine septum include subfertility, sporadic or recurrent pregnancy loss in the 1st or 2nd trimester, preterm labor and delivery, breech or transverse presentation of a fetus, and intrauterine growth restriction. The day surgery combination of hysteroscopy and laparoscopy is a gold standard for diagnosis, at which time the septum can be removed through the hysteroscope. In addition, since the presence of a uterine septum is a risk factor for the presence of endometriosis, the laparoscopic surgery provides an opportunity to diagnose and treat endometriosis in case the patient does have endometriosis as well.

Vaginal septums can cause menstrual problems or pain during sex or tampon use. Most doctors recommend undergoing surgery to correct this abnormality. Surgery to remove the septum can allow a girl to menstruate and use tampons normally, relieve associated menstrual pain, and provide for normal, healthy sex life.
Uterine septums generally do not cause health problems in women and may not require any treatment at all, but they can cause fertility problems in some patients. Women with uterine septums are more likely to experience infertility, premature labor, miscarriage, and recurring pregnancy loss than women with normally shaped reproductive organs. A septum may block sperm from reaching one of the ovaries, or significantly decrease the amount of space that a fetus has to grow inside the womb. Surgery to remove the septum can sometimes improve the conditions in the uterus and make pregnancy more likely.

A septate uterus does not typically affect a woman’s ability to conceive, but it does significantly increase their risk of a miscarriage. Women with septate uteri can also go on to have recurrent miscarriages.
Other than a miscarriage or recurrent miscarriage, there aren’t any symptoms of a septate uterus. It’s often only diagnosed after an investigation into the cause of miscarriages. Sometimes it can be picked up during a routine pelvic exam if the septum extends beyond the uterus to include the cervix and vagina as well.
A septate uterus may be seen on a standard 2-D pelvic ultrasound. An MRI can be a more accurate way to identify problems of the uterus.
After a pelvic examination is performed, your doctor will probably begin their investigation with one of these tests. In order to confirm the diagnosis, they may use a hysterosalpingogram or a hysteroscopy. A hysterosalpingogram is a type of X-Ray that highlights the inner uterus and fallopian tubes.
